Treble Clef, Student Edition
The Step-by-Step Piano Reading Book (Treble Clef) is designed to cover all of the pitches and rhythms encountered by the right hand in Suzuki Volume 1. It includes the treble clef only and is intended to be played with the right hand. It includes pitch on the left page (always with quarter notes only, in 4/4 time) and rhythm on the right page (each line on a single pitch, with varying rhythms and time signatures). New pitches and rhythms are added at a slow pace, allowing younger or less musically experienced students time to master each new concept before moving on.
The treble clef book covers a 2 octave range on the piano, from C4 (middle c) to C6, including 5 accidentals: Fsharp(4) & Fsharp(5), Bflat(4), Csharp(5) and Gsharp(5). By the end of the volume, students can read a 2 octave C Major scale, as well as a one-octave A minor scale, A Major scale, and F Major scale.
The book includes four time signatures (4/4, 3/4, 2/4, & 6/8), as well as the following rhythms:
Bass Clef, Student Edition
This reading book contains all of the same lessons at the same pacing as the treble clef book, but it's arranged for the bass clef. It spans C2-C4 and is intended to be played only by the left hand.
After practicing a lesson for a whole week, students often play the passages from memory rather than by reading them. Since these books are designed to promote reading, the teacher's edition includes the exact same lessons (new notes, rhythms, etc.) as the student's edition, but the notes are arranged differently. This way, when the student comes to the lesson, they can demonstrate their reading ability (rather than their memory ability) by reading new passages from the teacher's edition instead of the ones they practiced at home.
